About me

A developer who cares about the details

I'm a full-stack software engineer with over three years in legal tech. I build .NET and Angular applications to meet clients needs.

I care as much about the communication side of engineering as the code. I work closely with stakeholders to understand what the business actually needs, then build features that are practical, secure, and don't take longer to ship than they should. I keep documentation updated alongside the code, so the team doesn't lose track of how a system works.

I use AI to take the boring parts of the job off my plate, boilerplate, repetitive refactors, first drafts of documentation, so I can spend the saved time on the harder problems. I also use it as a reasoning partner, to stress-test an approach before I commit to it or catch a flaw in my own thinking.

I do my best work in high-trust teams, where feedback goes both ways and ideas get challenged before they get built. Working toward a shared goal, with everyone pushing each other to improve, is what makes a team worth being on.

Before software, I spent seven years as a chartered structural engineer, leading technical teams on multi-billion pound infrastructure projects. That background is why I care about reliability and cutting manual work down, rather than just shipping something that works.

Outside of work I travel, cook, and play a lot of sport. Skiing and hiking in the mountains are amongst my favourite things to do, and I'm always up for a local pub quiz.

User manual

How to work with me

Think of this as the README for working together, how I communicate, when I do my best work, and what I need from the people around me.

How I communicate

I'd rather you cut to the chase than send a message with no context. One of my most underrated skills is turning something complex and technical into plain English.

  • Cut to the chase, no context-free "hi" messages
  • I ask a lot of questions upfront so you know I understand, rather than going quiet and getting lost
  • In group settings I sometimes sit back and listen first, collecting my thoughts before contributing

How I work best

Give me the why behind the work and I'll run with it — I'm not happy just working through a ticket without understanding the bigger picture.

  • Give me the why behind the work, not just the ticket
  • Analytical and logical — I like decisions backed by reasoning
  • I’m a visual learner — diagrams, images, and annotated screenshots land far better than a wall of text

My working rhythm

Mornings are when I do my best work, and I protect my lunch — it's how I reset for the rest of the day.

  • Sharpest in the mornings or late in the afternoon
  • Meetings work best just before or just after lunch
  • I protect my lunch — it’s how I reset for the rest of the day

How to give me feedback

Say it plainly — feedback is the best way for me to learn and develop, so I'd rather hear it than guess it.

  • Say it plainly, I’d rather hear it than guess it
  • It's the best way for me to develop as a leader, developer, and person
  • Mistakes are fine as long as we learn and put systems in place to avoid them next time

What I need from you

A high-trust environment where we can disagree constructively and land on the outcome that's best for the team.

  • A high-trust environment where disagreement leads somewhere constructive
  • Credit where credit's due — always
  • I put team success before my own, and like coaching people up along the way

Where I struggle

I can border on perfectionism — chasing more confidence in an answer than the decision actually needs.

  • Can over-analyze past the point a decision actually needs — pull me up if you see it happening
  • I can doubt my own ability and hold back from putting myself forward — a nudge helps
